How to Build a Monthly Budget From Scratch (Free Template)

Building a monthly budget doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the more likely you are to stick with it. This guide walks you through creating your first budget from scratch — no accounting degree required.
Step 1: Know Your Monthly Income
Start by listing every source of income you receive in a typical month. This includes:
Use your actual take-home pay — the money that hits your bank account. Don't use your gross salary because you can't budget with money you never see.
Step 2: List Your Fixed Expenses
Fixed expenses are the bills that stay the same (or close to it) every month:
Write down every fixed expense and its amount. These are your non-negotiables.
Step 3: Estimate Your Variable Expenses
Variable expenses change from month to month. The best way to estimate them is to look at your bank statements from the last 2-3 months and average them out:

Treat savings like a bill — pay yourself first.
Step 5: Subtract Everything From Your Income
Now do the math:
*Income - Fixed Expenses - Variable Expenses - Savings = What's Left*
If the number is positive, great — you can allocate the extra to savings or fun money. If it's negative, go back to Step 3 and look for areas to trim.
Step 6: Track and Adjust Monthly
A budget isn't a one-time document. At the end of each month:
The goal isn't perfection — it's awareness. Every month you budget is a month you're more in control of your money.
